I think there is a cultural difference here. Black cats appear to be symbols of evil in US, while they are considered lucky in UK. There maybe more subtle regional differences that I don't know about.
I think that the cat has some links with paganism and/or witchcraft, witches are often said to have cats. I think this is because the cats eyes change with the light, as the moon changes. This may have affected the US attitude with the witch trials etc.
Black is also not necessarily associated with evil. Traditional dancers(UK) often black their faces; I think this has the advantage of hiding identity so that the dancers become more than their own individuality. Also it leaves them free to get up to tricks in disguise. It also makes them look like sweeps. Chimney sweeps were considered very lucky because of their black faces. It was particularly lucky for a bride to see a sweep, and lucky for him too, because he would get a kiss, and possibly some money. Also, the custom of first-footing declares that the first person over the threshold in the New Year should be a tall dark man.
I think that the demonisation of black in the US must have something to do with slavery and racism and the mental conflicts that surround these issues.
Anyway, black cats are definitely considered lucky , they are often associated with horse shoes, are given as presents to people in hospital, about to sit exams etc. If one crosses your path it definitely bodes well.

regardless of al the superstition it is just a cat going from side one to the other and you have seen it.
If one day your unlucky no one states its because a black cat crossed your path. Not seen can't be a fact.

Superstition has it that a black cat is "unlucky"
Some cultures see it as a manifestation of evil and witchcraft - even today.
An good example is a black cat that was severely beaten and kicked by fans at a soccer game in South Africa some time ago...under the premise that the cat was jinxing the game.

Supposedly unlucky, but if a black cat crosses your doorstep, it's unlucky to treat it badly, but considered good luck to invite it inside or something to that effect.
That's one superstition I believe is different for every person. I have a black cat, and he has been nothing but luck for me since the day I got him.
