They've been the main event for me since the bud bowl commercials but the one that is widely recognized as the originator is Apple's Revolution commercial with the woman throwing the sledgehammer at the giant talking head TV screen.

During the 1984 SuperBowl, Apple Computer launched the Macintosh with an ad that many advertising aficionados consider to be the best ever created. Since that time, daring companies have viewed the SuperBowl as the perfect venue at which to launch an "impact" product or service.
SuperBowl commercials have become an entity unto themselves. Well known as the prime spot for maximum reach broadcast advertisements, to millions of people, the commercials are half the fun of watching the SuperBowl! Millions upon millions of dollars are spent by companies to promote their product during this great sporting event. They spare no cost to make their commercials as memorable as possible.
Sixty-nine SuperBowl commercials were aired during the 2001 game. Each 30-second ad cost $2 million just for airtime, who knows what production costs were. Of these 69 commercials, just 17 were captioned for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. That means that 52 commercials were not accessible to millions of people around the world. After spending millions of dollars to produce and air their ads, 52 companies chose not to spend a couple of hundred more to caption them. Last year is also known for its lack of branding. While almost everyone remembers a commercial with a cowboy herding cats across the American badlands, almost nobody could tell you what they were advertising, or even who the company was! This was of course in part due to so many dot-coms who didn't necessarily have a product to advertise in the first place trying to get their name out there, but forgetting the bit about their name. This year's SuperBowl commercials will be a bit of a reversion back to the big names and players. Expect to see a lot of familiar brand names, a lot of celebrity faces, and chances are, a lot of heavy branding.

Wow someone else actually remembers the Apple Computers commercial. What made their commercial so different is that it was so different. They had a very very limited budget at the time and couldn't afford some giant production. So, they made a short simple commercial and used up the rest of the budget to put it on during the Super Bowl. It was such a "wow" factor that it got aired and re-aired on news broadcasts and ended up being the perfect marketing tool. It got lots of people asking who Apple was.

joker is right. it all started with the apple macintosh commercial in 1984. it was a play on the novel 1984 by george orwell and it's what started the craze of companies pulling out all stops for a commercial during the superbowl.
also, remember that the super bowl is the most watch television event in the u.s. so it's a perfect place to put your commercial for largest exposure.

When the advertising community decided that the American public were such bloody morons.
More money get spent on advertising stupid crap than
Aids, cancer, MS, racial awareness, public education, college funds,after school programs, combined.........face it jacka$$es. America is the new Rome. Your government entertains you with meaningless sports competitions while they rob you blind and plunder your children's resouces. And like Rome the American Empire will crumble, Never in the history of mankind has an Empire lasted.

In the US, pointless sporting events, expensive adds, flashy images, money, selling crap, are all really valued. Instead of the things that should be valued. Thats why they worship expensive TV commercials. Anything expensive must be good, right?
