I have a tropical looking plant. It has elliptical leaves, some red coloring along with a lot of green, parallel veins, and is herbacious. Does anyone know what type of plant this could be? Any information at all could be helpful: genus, family, etc.

google up the words maranta, calathea -that is just my guess as you described it. beautiful, hates too dry air, what they like the best is humid air like in greenhouse. the soil shouldnt dry out but shouldnt be too moist. not the easiest, but very beautiful. some are shade-tolerant or shade-loving. somehave a rest period in summer - it dies back. the Maranta leuconeura is the most hardy of them. I have calathea makoyana in my vivarium.

It is possibly a coleus. Check this pic out and see if your plant matches...

Do you have a picture? If so, can you post a URL to the pic, or email it to me at dafla25@yahoo.com?
