Hello:
This answer is in response to your question posted on yahoo concerning post-nasal drip.
Firstly, you have to figure out what the cause of the post-nasal drip is. The most common cause is allergies, more specifically allergic rhinitis (rhino meaning nose, itis meaning inflammation). It can cause coughing, hacking, sore throat and can lead to bronchitis also.
I would suggest that your co-worker see his personal physician to get a diagnosis. Like I said, it is more than likely allergies.
I tell my patients never to use the over the counter nasal sprays because if they are used for more than a few days, the tissue in your nose can become dependent upon the vasoconstrictor drug. Once you go off of the over the counter medication, usually something like afrin or its generics, you will get what is called "rebound symptoms" and it actually will make it worse.
Nasal steroid sprays are the best and are actually the standard of care for allergic rhinitis. I usually prescribe something like nasonex, flonase or rhinocort which works quite well for nasal allergies and there is no rebound symptoms, however you have to take it every single day during your allergy season. If the allergies are more than just nasal, I will add an oral medication such as Allegra, Zyrtec. He can try an over the counter medication first such as claritin reditabs, or alavert which often will work and the patient will not have to go on a prescription medication.
I hope this helped answer your question and alleviate some of your conerns.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.

I have it too, I throw up because of mine though i don`t know if thats common. But I sleep on only one pillow it helps me. As far as I know there not much you can do about it at least thats what I have been told, But I would try the pillow thing; being up high makes it easier for all the nasty stuff to drip down.

I would suggest going to the supermarket and looking through all the nasal products that they have. I prefer alfrin but that's just me. Good luck with it.
