... set up a home network without a router. I have two PCs and would like to hook them up together for file sharing without having to buy addidtional hardware. Can anyone help?

It is possible, though not advisable (assuming cable is not classified as hardware). You can buy an ethernet crossover cable and run it between the network cards on each computer, however, if you use the network card for your internet connection, you will lose your connection to the internet. Given the current price of networking equipment, you could buy a router for under $40, I don't see the need to not set up a proper network.

Connect them with cross over cables and make them in the subnet Example
First computers Address - 192.168.18. 1
Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
Second Computers Address -192.168.18.2
Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway for 2nd - 192.168.18.1
thats enough to start accessing them. Make sure that you share the folders to access them over the network

there are several options, but since you don't wanna invest in hardware the cheapest and easiest way is to get a crosscable, providing both computers have a network interface card.
