Wow! I started my sewing on a Viking! Yes, Men who are genius' and have three younger sisters, often want to know how EVERYTHING works, including sewing machines! Very useful in my career in the military! Lots of promotions, lots of alterations and fittings of new uniforms... for each assignment.
Even taught some of the fine ladies of the military, in some classes!
Viking is BEST of all the machines!!!
I did a search on google. Husqvarna bought the Viking brand and factories! Still great quality!
Threading the machine might be easy, if we only knew what model you had! The serial number might help! Any sewing store might have an employee that knows!

Put the spool on the spindle with the thread coming from the back as you face it, go left put the thread through any thread guide you have
There is a top thread guide that has a bolt looking thing on it on some models, that is for going back to the bobbin winder, don't catch the thread on that bolt but look at the thread guide, maybe its just an arm looking thing then go down
the thread goes around the tension wheel then pulled back into that tiny little wire
then up to the take up arm it has a hole in it then down to any guide straight to the one above the needle
Rule of thumb if the last thread guide opens to the front the needle goes side to side
if it opens to the side the needle goes front to back.

Quite possibly, depending on who the 17 year old and 30 year old are in question. E.G. A man who truanted from school and ended up getting in jail at 18, still there at 30, would not be as clever as, say, the next Einstein at 17

Go to a local sewing machine shop or JoAnn Fabric and see if they have any manuals.
