I have downloaded direct x, still no sound when just last week I could pay cds & dvds....!

U need to download Sound drivers (for XP) from the Company Web Site who produce the laptop . Enter Google and type
UR laptop model xp sound driver download

right click mycomputer icon go to properties
cliick on the hardware tab click on device manager tab click on the + next to sound/video /game/controllers right click the device for your audio sound then click remove
only the sound device for your sound card then click apply and ok then restart pc withdows xp on restart up will find your sound card drive and install it .. this work for me

need to check your sound card it may need a new driver or need it reinstalled
