I also have Bose headphones and they work just fine. What exactly is the problem? Do the headphones have a volume adjustment knob? Are you sure it's plugged in all the way?

The impedance of ipods are quite odd. I had the same issue with a pair I bought. It seems the ipod's output cannot drive certain headphones - especially those with a large range.

the won't work if there is an impedence difference. try usin different headphones/speakers at different levels of resistance.

8 ohm, 32 ohm and smaller ones too
