his most well acted film is probably the shootist. not many people have seen it but it's much like clint eastwood's unforgiven in that it shows what happens when those tough as nails characters wayne portrayed his whole career grow old. (wayne's character in the shootist was dying of cancer much like wayne in real life)
i also like his character in the man who shot libert valance. it's a smaller part but a strong role for wayne.

true grit and the searchers-im not really a fan of westerns as such but if either of tose two are on the tv i always get drawn in and watch
