I'd agree with Grandma Punk. Get layers!
Usually the only students who go formal are the ones at Oxford or Cambridge, and that's only for certain dinners. Otherwise most just live in jeans, t-shirt and trainers. You can get away with pretty much anything, though it's always good to have something nice to go out in, decent trousers and a nice casual shirt for instance. But Yorkshire can feel REALLY, really cold (-5 degrees but wet and windy as well), so you'll definitely need (and I know this sounds sad, but you'll not regret it!) at least one warm woolly jumper, and probably a hoodie and a coat/jacket too. I think you'd be better off, actually, starting out with a few t-shirts and jeans and then adding to your wardrobe once you get to York - shops here will have everything you need! ;)
Try also asking the Uni for a copy of their 'alternative' prospectus unless you already have one and check out the photos and advice in there.
Just wear what you're comfortable in - beauty of being a student is that noone generally cares what you look like!
More important than the clothes in terms of the first few days being there will be a tin-opener, a bottle-opener and a chocolate cake... Can-opener keeps you fed, chocolate cake lures people in and the bottle-opener reminds them how useful you are and gets you into alcohol... Worked for me!

All the best when you arrive in the UK..... students generally dress here casual. I would say jeans, but as you're going to be in York in the winter then do the whole layers thing - a sweatshirt with t-shirt on top thing and some jumpers. Oh and an umbrella, oh and a warm coat, ok I'm freaking myself out now as I'm beginning to sound like my mum.
Good luck

Just go for casual clothes like jeans, trousers, tshirts etc. You want to be comfortable all day! and then just wear a coat or jacket during winter!! maybe buy some wolly gloves too, just incase them lecture halls are chilly during winter!!

A denim and/or leather jacket is always a good thing. Also have some nice hooded sweatshirts of a good quality material.
Jeans/khakis/ t-shirts.
Hope you enjoy your stay in the US!

You are a student. It is a time of experimentation. Just wear what you are comfortable in and you will fit right in. Students come in many shapes, sizes and styles!!
