I'm hoping to find inteligent answers here and not pop remarks from someone who has no idea what drives a person to this depth of darkness.

His younger brother drown when they were children, and it happened in his presence. As he began to lose eyesight he thought that his blindness was "punishment" from God. So, he dealt with a lot of personal blame and pain. He came from a very poor family, endured racism in the music world, lived in a time when drugs were the "cool" thing to do...
It can take many factors to create drug use, but it usually boils down to an inner emptyness. Afterall, if your life was perfect, why would you want to change it in such a drastic manner?
Incidentally, I saw Ray in concert and he was great!

You want a REAL reason. I guess there are many:
-he had a troubled and unstable childhood, since his brother's death
-he started touring in a band and probably used them as boosters or relievers as most stars on tour do!

Because they made him feel good and people didn't really know the effects of drugs at that time.

someone gave it to him one night, he kept doing it, he became addicted because its not just a "high" it becomes a chemical dependency in your body and when you dont have it you get really sick. besides, they never realized back then how bad drugs were for a person. sad world, i know.
