The workload is generally a lot heavier than high school (depending what college you go to), but there's parts of the year that have more work than others. For instance, before midterms or final exams.
Most classes I've taken have had either two or three tests - one final exam and the other one(s) spread throughout the semester.
The style of your classes will depend not only on what type of class it is (e.g. math-more lecture, philosophy-more participation), but also on the professor, because each one teaches differently. A lot of times, they encourage participation but it doesn't count for a grade or anything.

It really depends on what type of classes you take and what is your major and minor. For instance, if you are an Engineering major, you have a lot of classes relating to math and physics. You will be doing alot of calculations. If you are a Psychology major, you will be doing alot of reading and writing of papers. The class load is not that bad, it is bearable. There are alot of classes that are just lecture and some do have class participation, it really depends on the professor. If you really want to see what type of professor you have, there is a great site called "Rate My Professor". It rates professors based on students that have already taken that class. It is one of the best way to find out about a class and a teacher.

Well......'lot' term is not applicable as the workload is decided and fixed by government and university rules. Besides the workload is depending upon the course you are in. For example, if its science stream, then naturally there are lots of practicals plus theory periods....whereas with arts faculty there are lecturers only....for commerce lectures plus spot visits outside the campus.....tutorials, semester, unit tests, discussions are part and parcel of any college education....but its fun really to be among all those students and staff....the environment is really splendid in college campus.

Classes vary from subject to subject. I am a Science Major but when I take UCC classes (core) I find classes like sociology are really fun, have lots of input and spark debate. Financial classes are by nature more boring. Tests also vary class to class. Start slow, choose a couple of classes that interest you. If you do ok with those, next sememester go higher.

It is a lot of work. For every hour you spend in class, you have to spend two hours out of class studying.
