I hear something calling in my trees in Southern Ontario, and wonder if they are cicadas, or some other insect, or maybe even a tree frog. The call is about 8-10 seconds in length, with the pitch remaining the same for the entire call, but the volume is diminished at the beginning and end.

Yes, there are about 9 species of cicada that live in various regions of Canada. Your description of the call certainly sounds like it could be one.

If you are interested in identifying the cicada once you find it, this page has keys to identifying the species of North America (which unfortunately includes hundreds of species, instead of just the nine of Canada).

And if it is a cicada, there is no need to call your local pest management people. Cicadas are a perfectly normal part of the ecosystem, and no town or city that I know of has a cicada control program.

that sounds exactly like a cicada would sound. it should be coming from a tree. we have lots of those in new england. exactly as you said, 8-10 seconds in length. it's very loud. the other day I found a cicada in the grass .. they are certainly big insects and huge eyes. it was dying -- I don't know why. There was a wasp trying to eat it. I took the cicada away and examined it closely.. it had a hard time moving and sort of flipped over.

It is hard to describe sounds, so I found a website for you from a guy who is obsessed with cicada sounds, maybe you could compare your sound with this guy's:

I haven't heard that before, but technically there could be cicadas living in Canada. I know they live around Beijing and the winters there can be rather cold too, so they can handle it.

And so far I haven't heard any Canadian frogs calling from out of the trees !!

I agree with haysoos2. Cicadas are normal and quite welcomed in my part of Ontario. For us, it is another sign of our wonderful summers!
