When I tried to add 134A, it would not go in. As I thought I was doing it wrong I took it to a mechanic to get it professionally added. He told me that it also wouldn't go in that it must be plugged and I would have to take it to a specialist. Is there a way to "unplug" the system using over the counter products?

Try checking to see if the a/c clutch is engaging. Start the car and have someone turn the a/c on while you watch and listen to the unit. You will hear and see it engage. If it isn't, it could be the clutch has gone out, or it's not plugged in, or too low of pressure in the system. If it is and it's blowing out hot air, then the system is low on freon. If it proves to be a problem with the system, then take it to at least 2 air conditioning specialists for diagnosis and quotes. I would stay away from the dealers, because of the prices they charge for the same service.

Watch out! This repair may not be worth the cost. You can easily run up a $1200 bill repairing the air conditioning on a 10 year old car. I would take it to the dealer and ask whether it's worth repairing or not, meaning your not going to spend more than X dollars. Even if they fix it, it may not be reliable. Try opening the windows until you can get a new car.

This is a bigger job than a shade tree mechanic can handle. The system will have to be evacuated and the various ac components (in the lines) will need to be replaced. The lines will need to be blown out and then a vacuum put on the system to make it ready for the coolant and oil to be added.
As I said it's a big job.

No. Try looking around for prices to see which is the cheapest place to get the car's a.c. fixed. It is going to be hot!

Sounds like the compressor is already gone south.

no, you do need to take it to an a/c shop...don't mess around...you could blow the compressor and then you are looking at $500+ for the repair
