Brand-new implies something is completely new. As for the time factor, it simply means something you have just bought and hardly any time has passed since that act. In other words, it puts emphasis on the newnness or freshness of something one has just acquired. But the million-dollar question is, can we not say 'new' and mean the same thing. When you consider it deeply, yes, we can indeed mean so. So, when one says 'I bought a new car yesterday' or 'I bought a brand-new car yesterday' - there is hardly any difference between the two. Well, we are dealing with English Language which keeps evolving and at the same time, there are umpteen ambiguities, as in any other languages!

To distinguish straight from the manufacturer and never before used from new to me but someone else had it first. It's the same as the distinction between "neuf" and "nouveau" in French. I suspect people use it too show off.

Saying "brand new" implies that it's not only new to us (i.e. seen before or used) but it is in fact an entirely new entity.
