The poor and the rich?
The Democrats and the Republicans?
The nice and the mean?
Yes, my oppinion is that this nation is more divided than ever...
One reason for this is because of the leadership its under.
The biggest reason being I think is that because of the continued state of things being rather....how should I say....sinful.
We over-do everything, everything to excess, everything is me me me in this society. Every one is defensive, everyone is guilty, and no one cares for one another. Sorry, just a little jaded and sinical. ....maybe a little caloused too.

Italianchick,
Maybe not as divided as in 1860...... Anyway, you are right. However, people are truly more alike that we realize. Everybody basically wants the same things out of life. We just can't agree on how to get there. Unfortunately for all of us, there are a lot of people who think that the government is capable of solving our problems, and that is sad and dangerous. Most people don't even know what caused the so-called Civil War, or as we Southerners call it, The Northern War of Aggresssion. Many of the states at that time, had come to realize that the Federal Government, was exceeding the powers granted to it by the Constitution. They tried to resolve this through the political process, but to no avail. In frustration, they finally decided to leave the Union. They had freely joined, and believed they could freely leave. Most folks don't know that the state of Maryland was going to secede, but President Lincoln had their entire state legislature arrested before they could take a vote. The power hungry feds, didn't want to lose any of their assets, so they cooked up a story about slavery, and the rest is history. It is interesting to note, that there were more slave holders in the North, than the South. Once again today, we see the Federal Government grabbing power far in excess of that granted constitutionally. The old story of "Losing a few freedoms, to keep the people safe", is coming out of the closet again. It has been the method of every despot, tyrant, and dictator who has ever ruled. Whether or not people will wake up before it is too late (if it isn't already too late) remains to be seen. If folks would turn off their TVs, it would really help. That is how they shape our attitudes and fears. It is the ultimate propaganda machine. When they claim that we must be disarmed for our own good, during the "current" state of emergency, run for the hills. Whatever rights you ever had under the Constitution, will be gone, and they won't be coming back, ever. The concentration camps won't be far behind. "Those who fail to learn the lessons of History, are doomed to repeat them"

Yes, I believe we are a very divided nation - and it's divisions are going to prove as devastating to this country as the Civil War - the two opposing forces are - multiculturalism (which we will see in a few years has been a fancy way to say communism) and diversity - which is exactly what it means to divide - and USA (can't just say American anymore) cohesiveness - which has always been the bind that ties - but we are being brainwashed through media, tv, education that without recognizing the individuality and allowing the "what's relative to me is all that matters" mentality then we have actually taken away the adhesive that has held the "melting pot" together - and that is the unity of being one Nation, one People, under one God, and even though we've always allowed the individuality - it was never to conflict with the one - but political correctness (another fancy way of saying communism) is undermining us and what we have thought is solid ground upon which we stand is going to actually be a sink hole.

men and women?
More seriously ever since we've had two political parties the country has been divided,
And political parties try to strengthen these divisions, to get people to vote for their candidates, and some people try to create more divisions to get into or stay in power to control the government.
But historically we've had much more significant divisions in the past, which sometimes resulted in violent clashes, like the struggle between big business and labor, the clashes over prohibition, slavery, the deliberate attempts by southern business to divide whites and blacks to prevent unionization, the division in the country over the Vietnam war, and civil rights,
The major current areas where some people are irreconcilably divided (where they see the issue as a conflict between good and evil without grounds to compromise ,

I think it is divided into lots of parts. Call them blocs or zones or cliques, but I think this nation is fractured.
