You have been given a few sites, however as they say 'caveat emptor' - let the buyer beware!!
The problem with laptops is that generally they are lower spec than a PC, spares are very expensive - several times the cost.
They are expensive to repair, you cannot alter them too much.
Ok, what does this mean, simply WHY was the laptop sold in the first place?
New laptops can be had for around $500-$600 from Circuit City etc (Acers are OK) - Makes in order of personal experience

Look for one with at least 512 MB RAM, 3 or 4 USB ports WiFi, IR Port, FIreWire, Ethernet, S_ Video (if you want to play DVD Movies) same with Dolby 5.1 sound out.

you can search for refurbished computers...they are cheaper than new, but a lot of them have warranties whereas a used one may not...
