When I watch TV with closed captioning and also have the sound on, I can't make sense of most of what I'm reading. Often it doesn't come close to what they are saying, things are badly misspelled or are spelled right but aren't the words they said, or it's full of weird characters. I can't imagine how people who can't hear can make anything out from it.

That is because people marginalize the Deaf and hearing impaired in this country. Deaf are given a substandard education and and when it comes to hiring stenographers or captionists to work for them, people just hire anyone without holding them to a high standard I feel strongly about this since I am a professional captionist and interpreter for the deaf.

Most of us are educated with at least and A.S Degreee and we get paid a heck of a lot more than minimum wage.

I have read the other answers before mine, and we have three tv's in our home, and I do not have any problems reading the closed caption, on any of them. If you are watching a show, that is broadcast live, naturally the CC will be a few seconds slow. When you watch a show, that has been taped, usually the CC is right on time. I watch the soap, "All My Children" and they do a great job, with the CC. I am not sure if there is an adjustment, that has to be tuned on the TV or not. I just know that I do not have any problems with my closed caption..

1) it is difficult to keep up in real time with captioning
2) Many people don't understand what is being said
3) Some people doing the captioning are not educated enough to know what is being said - I can't believe it's more than a minimum wage job.

i hear you. it's very annoying because i sometimes use captions when the people are talking low or i can't understand what they're saying. sometimes it even leaves off parts of sentences. that's whack!

when it comes to what they are saying, like on Law & Order or other regular TV shows, the capitioners go by the script.....the characters and directors ad lib or change the lines.
