I've had gerbils before and they are very territorial. If we really want a friend for your Guinea pig, I think you should just get a nother Guinea pig or a rabbit. Rabbits get along quite well with Guinea pigs but are more expensive.
Whatever the case, you shouldn't put a gerbil with a Guinea pig in the same cage.

Not really an ideal match. These are two totally different species with different diet requirements. If nothing else, the typical guinea pig cage has wider bars and the gerbil will just escape.

No, it honestly isn't a good idea to put two different species in an enclosed space where their natural instincts make them feel they are competing for food and space - I've had 'fish' kill each other in an aquarium, and bigger cats rip younger cats to shreds (Yes. I've had a lot of animals) - So I would honestly avoid it just to be safe, you don't know I mean there is always a chance they will just get along (i.e. there is a rabbit that is terribly attached to a snake at a zoo I believe - and the snake simply refuses to eat the rabbit but eats everything else) - But I would not advise it, the hamsters are evil little critters with violent tendencies and sharp claws.

I remember back when "Pretty Woman" came out with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, shortly afterwards I heard of some things Richard Gere was doing with gerbils but we won't get into that. It should be safe to put them together. They are much alike in the animal kingdom

It is like most animals that you put together for the fist time. They will not be so thrilled about sharing a cage and might fight a little bit, but eventually they will get along. I learned from dealing with animals if you keep them in seperate cages or anything else so they can see each other but be protected, they will get along when you do put them together.

Al and Green moster have the best answers, this is doable, make sure they each have a place to hide. Guinea pigs and rabbits will get along also, as long as you have enough room.

NO don't put them together. The guinea pig might bite it's head off and more. Just don't put them together.
