I have a Black Box KVM
I was trying to use between and old 486 win 98 machine
and a new HP with XP home.
when I switch away from the new machine then come back it prompts no mouse/keyboard detected.
what did I do wrong?
I've had problems before trying to network XP is this an OS problem?

first off, a KVM set-up is not a "network"...

you need to provide your black box KVM model number here, otherwise it is hard to know what your problem may be. we need to know whether the interface between the computer and the KVM, the type of keyboard/mouse (PS2 or USB).

i do not believe the issues is between your xp box and the switch. what you may try is to disconnect the old 486 machine from the KVM (mouse & keyboard), and try to switch between the four connections, if the xp machine behaves when switching back from the 'phantom' machines, it is probably safe to say it is the problem with your 98 box.

i have seen issues with a KVM that connects a HP WinXP computer and a HP/UX unix workstation, the KVM is definitely compatible with the WinXP computer, however the symptoms only appear on the WinXP box.

what i find pretty interesting is that if you have such an expensive KVM, why in the world do you still have a 486 box? :D

It's more likely a hardware problem with that old 486 machine. Give that machine up...time to move on to something newer - more energy efficient, powerful and compatible.

I would think "directions" came with the new HP/XP home :) . Why don't you give those a try. :)
