Bill Gates got into Harvard, not just an ordinary feat. Drop out or not, he had earned enough recognition to get into an excellent school. Education doesn't equal success, but it opens your mind to new ideas, thoughts, concepts, and world view....it is important for personal growth, not only success.

And proportionally look at all the drop outs that are in jail, on the street, or haven't made it. Gates is an anomoly.

Education is what will get you ahead. Whether it is at Harvard or the local community college, taking time in life for space to learn should be disciplined throughout your life.

Even in the work world, to get ahead you will continuously need to develop skills and get more credentials. Usually in the form of classes, workshops, online courses etc.

What you will find if you don't go onto college is that you will shut out numerous doors. With competition for jobs, if you don't meet "minimum" qualifications like having a college degree, they won't even look at your resume and you won't get the interview.

Even when you do get the job - when offices downsize, they often will catagorically remove people by education as it protects them legally as it can be quantified.

In otherwords, get the degree. There are do many options for how you do it (more so than when Bill Gates was in College) that your future may depend on it.

Bill Gates had something going for him -- he was smart enough to get into Harvard. He also had to start his own company -- because very few people would have hired him without a degree. He was lucky -- it worked out for him.

While the richest man in America has no degree, the richest woman in America (his wife) has a BA and an MBA from Duke.

Yes -- it is possible to succeed in business without an education. It is also possible to swim across the English Channel. However, I know my chances of getting across alive are better if I have prepared for the swim. Succeeding in business is the same thing. A good preparation is essential. College will help with that. A degree from a good college will not only help, it will open doors.

There are a lot of people who would not hire you without a degree.

I learned the hard way that education is the answer. Not many people will succeed without it. Yes you have your one in a million who do succeed without education. In todays world the best thing one can do is get an education and maybe get a couple of degrees so if something goes wrong and you can't find work in that field you can fall back on the other degree.

I know an electrician who has no college. He does have 10 years worth of work experience. He travels alot and he hates his job because he doesn't get to see his son much at all. He has been looking for work that doesn't require traveling the world. Nobody will hire him and they tell him the reason is because he has no college experience. In one way he is the one in a million who got lucky and landed his traveling job and good pay. He doesn't feel so lucky now that he is burned out on his travels and can't get hired elsewhere.

You have to be pretty intelligent to get into Harvard in the first place... so no, it isn't necessary, but if you don't get an education the odds of you succeeding aren't that great, unless you consider a minimum wage job as success... ;-)

Overall, yes, an education will get your more places than not. Times are different, more and more jobs are technical and need the formal training. Sure, Bob might be a computer genius, but without the paper saying he is, it is just rhetoric. Get the education.

I suppose that it depends on your definition of success. I would say that there are a lot more successful Harvard graduates than there are successful Harvard drop-outs.

I think it depends on your interests. You should discover it first. Some of your interests may strongly force you for an education like medicine but some of them may not, like painting so of course education will help you a lot for a better result but it is not always necessary!
