That would depend ultimately on the lie and the implications. Even though I think lying is wrong, if my wife and child would die if I told the truth and be saved if I lied then I would probably lie. If it were just me and nobody else could be threatened by the truth, then I'd be more inclined to tell the truth.

This question requires common sense. It really depends on the lie/truth. For instance if you were hiding a domestic abuse victim in your home and her spouse showed up with a gun looking to kill her and anyone who was helping her , would the smart thing not be to lie in order to get him away and protect the victim and yourself then call the police.
If you were the victim of a violent crime and the perpetrator had a gun to your head and said "If you tell anyone I'll kill you." would you not say "I promise I wont tell anyone." and then once in a safe place report the crime to stop him from doing it to someone else? All questions/answers are not always black and white . This is why we have common sense and the ability to reason.

I would have to take the stance of the American politician/elected official.
I will only tell the truth if it doesn't incriminate me. If it does create any discomfort for me, I will refuse to answer. Mr. Bush has this down to an art.... Bill Clinton on the other hand should have learned it.
Just imagine how the Monica L. situation would have turned out if Mr. Clinton had only said...." It's none of your g.d. business" like Mr. Bush did when he was asked if he was still snortin' coke.

I have been in a position where this was my choice, I lied and lived. I asked God for forgiveness, but I lied first. I knew that to die was to sentence my children to death as well, and I could not do that. I dont know if anyone can answer tht question truthfully, if they have not been in a situation where they were forced to make the decision.

It depends on the circumstances. As long as the lie did not cause harm to another, then I would lie. Especially if it was over something that I was not passionate about.
