Have you had success and/or side effects with drugs? Has anyone been able to lower their cholesterol with changes in diet alone?

My doctor doubts that I can make a change because I already eat well - low fat, no fried foods, no fast foods, very little meat, lots of fruits & veggies. Now I'm looking for specific suggestions, including nutraceuticals, e.g. lecithin.

My dad used to have really high cholesterol and then he started running and working out. he also changed his diet considerably. he also gets it checked every year. He didn't take any drugs, and now there are only like 2 things that still need to be lowered, as opposed to 8 or 9.

Diet and exercise help you need to go to the American heart association tons of info. If you go to a dietitian they will give you a diet and make suggestions based on just you not a fad diet an it is the healthiest way. My dad takes Lipitor and has lowered his along with exercising 3 times a week for 3 minutes it could be just walking. Diet and exercise alone did not work in his case they say genetics play a factor. Good luck

There are many medicines that lower the cholesterol like Lipid (most begin with Lippi something) its better to take the medicine no side effects and also work on changing your eating habits also, but many people eat healthy diets and still have high cholesterol.

I wont take drugs unless its absolute only solution. Barry Sears has a book eating in the zone. By change your eating habits, not dieting per say, you can help control your insulin levels and speed up your metabolism. There is also a vitamin on the market, ask at your local vitamin shop. Pick the book up at the library, or you can buy the paperback. By the way my cholesterol level is about 120, my doctor is jealous its lower than his.

I read in a book that "Benecol" Butter (Plant Stanols/Sterols) taken 3 servings per day was successful in a study, that's what i'm trying now, my cholest. was 311, I tried several staton and other drugs, they made me really sick (lots of side effects) also to keep my homocystine down I take vitamine B6 (50mg), B12 (500mcg) and Folic Acid 800 mcg) - last test I had Result: "7" - which is concidered a good rate - if goes over 10 you are in high risk of haert desease
