I talked to two young men yesterday (one white and the other hispanic) just finishing high school that are entering the military. When I asked them why they would choose that life with the current state of US affairs and both replies were the same.
They did not have money for college. The parents were not able to send them to college yet the income did not qualify them for financial aid. They were going to the military because it is the only way they can get into college. When I asked if they were afraid of going to Iraq or being killed in combat, they both answered no. It is a chance they are willing to take to go to COLLEGE! Republicans can do so much for other countries and waste so much money on war. What about the needs right here in America? Of course Bush's daughter do not have to enlist. He would discourage them if they even hinted at the thought! Why would they?

Why do they go? Because their parents and society, people like you, pressure them to go. Making them think that if they don't fight in wars, then they're not true patriots. There are some who have a genuine belief that they're making a difference. Kudos to them and I support my fellow man.

But also face the facts that a lot of these kids have no other choice but to join the military.

Then when people speak out against the war, we're anti-american. Thats a load of BS.

THERE IS NO CAUSE, ONLY PERSONAL AGENDAS!!!!

You have a point that it is an all-volunteer army (so far), and therefore the criticism of Bush not forcing his daughters to Iraq would be inappropriate. However, why doesn’t he ENCOURAGE his daughters to VOLUNTEER, if he professes to believe in the war himself? Once the verbiage is changed, the critique of Bush’s hypocrisy still has some validity. Think about it, if a parent believes that being a doctor is a noble profession, they generally encourage their kids to pursue that profession. The truth of the matter is that Mr. Bush knows that he is duping our military men and the public. He honestly doesn’t believe that he is sending them to fight for noble causes. He knows that this is about benefiting corporate interest and future exploitation of a foreign people for political purposes. No father would encourage his kids to sacrifice themselves for that.

The best way to feel something is to experience it. Bush himself did all he could to make sure that he didnot serve in the Military. maybe if his daughters experience what other Americans' children experience he would take the sanctity of life more seriously.

you're wrong, bush did make the decision to send the nation's children to THIS war, in iraq. and under false pretenses, too.

It seems only fair, that since he is asking for sacrifices from the American people, that he should make sacrifices from his own family.
