the best free program to use is DVD Shrink (do a yahoo or google search for it)
it will compress the video down to the standard 4.7 gigs a DVD holds. Most movies might run from 5-6 gigs, so there is very little noticible video resolution lost.

DVD Shrink would compress the film for you so you could put it on a single disc but that would drtop the quality so it's probably not the best option. You say you're happy to split it so I'd advise doing just that. Click Reauthor then Start/End in DVD Shrink and you can select the chapters to copy off. Just do this multiple times, copy off another disc's worth of move at a time then burn your multiple split films onto separate discs when you're finished.

You need to use the prog called DVD shrink which you can get here http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html

tutorial is here:

Essentially the disc you have is probably a dual-layer dvd which means that it holds over 9 gb of data; now if you want to make a 1:1 copy of your dvd just get a dual-layer dvd+r disc; otherwise use dvd shrink. Basically dvd shrink allows you to select what you want from your dvd to burn to another one.

Use DVD Shrink in "re-author" mode.
