You don't.
The only time you truly know that is after the event.

It's all about trust. I have a friend who put it in the best possible context. She once asked me to imagine I had £100 and if I were to be asked for it by a friend, what would I do? My answer- give it to them. Wrong! The key, she said to building up trust was to start by giving them £10 and then see what they do with it, if they're careless or they spend it wisely. Then, when they come back to you, give them another £10 and so it goes on until you've reached your limit, and then it's time to start taking back a little bit. For me, true friendship is give and take and never feeling like you're giving too much/too little or not getting enough back.

Genuine friends are always happy to talk.
Will ask how you are before they tell you how they are ( except in times of crisis when maybe it should be you doing the asking)
Understand your moods.
Know you.
