Personally, my favorite is Girl Interrupted. Other favorites are: Moulin Rouge, A Beautiful Mind, Where the Heart Is, Music of the Heart, Mr. Holland's Opus, Ghost, Girl, Cruel Intentions, Don't Say a Word, Bless the Child, Regarding Henry, Artemisia, Finding Neverland, Pleasantville, October Sky, Corrina Corrina, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Parent Trap, The Land Before Time, Hook, My Girl, The Secret Garden, The Sandlot, Matilda, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Kissing Jessica Stein.

But if you're looking for favorites of the whole country, then it could be Titanic, Gone With the Wind, or The Godfather...depending on what you use to measure the "greatness" of the movie (critics, box office revenue, box office tickets, or voters). Check out the links below.

I don't think you can come up with a greatest movie. It so subjective. If someone says "Citizen Kane" well I can't really relate to it. But it was a breakthrough movie. Innovative, brilliant. And I can say the same thing about "The Manchurian Candidate" So it so subjective, because it about one relating to the movie, I can't come up with be all greatest movie. A couple of movies that affect me, emotionally, and are artistically sophisticated, The Graduate, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Nashville, Catch-22, 2001, A Clockwork Orange.

But then I do like movies like Dumb and Dumber, Old School, and Airplane. HAHAHAHAHA

Edit: I answered the question and then looked at other answers, and it proves my point, how can I forget Forrest Gump, Gone with Wind, The Godfather, The Godfather II (the only time time a sequel was better)

you have to go back to the legends that started it all. films nowadays are just a mediocre attempt at capturing what has already been done. this is a hard question and it definitely can't be answered with just 1 movie. here are my 3 greatest of all time

casablanca
to kill a mockingbird
it's a wonderful life

For lavish settings, beautiful sound track, drama and fine acting...I guess the edge goes to "Gone with the Wind".

There are many others can be equally as good.

To name a few: "Dr. Zhivago", "Titanic", "Shindler's List","Casa Blanca", "Citizen Kane", and maybe you can throw in "Seabiscuit".

For stronger tastes:

"Godfather", "Once Upon a Time in America", "Prince of the City" and "Scarface".
