What is the grade level of the students? What are you attempting to assess?

1. At the beginning of the term, go to your curriculum plans and select the learning expectations for the term.
2. During the term, keep records of students' achievement relative to the learning expectations. (Be sure to provide students with feedback throughout so they have opportunities to improve/maintain the grade.)
3. Establish the criteria for grades at each of the different achievement levels (in conjunction with other teachers delivering the same curriculum at the same level).
4. On the report, record the most consistent, recent grade for the expectation. (Make sure you have kept documentation to substantiate the grade when speaking to the parents/students.)

This is it simplified. There would be at least a half a book of notes explaining the details.

what kind of students would you be preparing progress reports for who arent in school? Id basically say that all the little idiots are flunking, but if they arent you could include a test and homework grade average along with an attitude grade in a report. Seems pretty straightforward to me, but then again i went to school in the 70-80's so i dont know what they dont do now, i guess if they dont have tests or homework it may be a little hard to tell how they are doing.

If by progress reports you mean reports to give to parents prior to report cards, then you either follow school procedure or do whatever you want. I personally just use our school's grading software to create the report. Parents can see individual assignments, their child's grade, the class average on the assignment, and the due date. I can even add notes for EACH assignment. You could also just list the average for each subject at the time of the report. I write personal notes for students who are improving or need to improve.
