I hitchhiked after highschool in the early 70's just to experience travelling. Boy did I. I hitchhiked from Minneapolis to Daytona Beach Florida then to Las Vegas and back with a backpack and small tent.. In bad weather I stayed in churches, etc. Even got put up in an open jail cell one time. I worked sometimes for meals and pocket money where ever I could. It was pretty cool as I sent a lot of postcards along the way to myself at home. Also I hithiked up and down the west coast of Australia. Awesome! The nicest people I ever met.
That was a different time and never would suggest it nowdays. Besides it is much more dangerous and illegal if not done right.

Yes, numerous times when I was a young soldier and lacked bus/train fare to get home on leave. Never once had a problem. I would not recommend it for anyone today for two reasons...
1) I did my hitch-hiking back in the early sixties, during more innocent and less threatening times;
2) I did it in military uniform and many of the people who picked me up were once soldiers themselves and simply wanted to help a "buddy" out.

If you're thinking that hitching is a cheap way to get around, don't do it. Not today. Way too many crazies out there, even for soldiers because of the threat from terrorists. You could pay with your life--far more than the cost of bus/train fare.

Yes. I hitch-hiked for the first time ever last week. Got picked up by a 60 year old lady and she raped me. And I'm a 36 year old guy. Go figure.

Yes I have.
No it was not.

My first experience with hitchhiking was in 1969 when I missed the bus on the way home from school on my first day back after a nasty motorcycle accident. I had a broken leg and I was on crutches. No one was home and I thought I'll just set out and surely someone will pick up a kid on crutches in the middle of winter in Alaska. Wrong.
No one stopped during my three or four mile trek home.
I still can't believe that.

yes, once when i ran out of petrol, doing a delivery to a university- nearest petrol sation was wither 2 miles further out of town (may be closed at night..?) or 3 miles back into town.. i chose into town, and some people from the Uni gave me a lift shortly after leaving campus.. got another lift back too, so big up to them!

i would ONLY take/offer lifts to someone, in a built up area, with plenty of witnesses- you do it at your own risk.
