"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

"Hier schlagen wir nicht." (We don't fight here.)

This quote is from a general in the 19th century. He'd surveyed the enemy array, noting their dispositions, their numbers and conditions. He could attack and drive them from their position, with his own army--but he reckoned the battle a bad bargain, and took his army away, and later fought a much easier battle against the same force.

What makes the quote remarkable--and memorable--was that that general had the nerve to refuse a glorious victory now for a merely workmanlike victory later. That kind of general deserves the ribbons he wears.
