Taking both film courses and photography courses are the best way to go. If your daughter is not in college yet, or they don't offer the courses at your local high school she can always try to learn by example. I.e. watching different movies and their cinematography and possibly filming a short film herself. If she is really passionate about it, she should definately try to film her own stuff just to get used to working w/ a camera, getting different angles, etc...

Some movies I recommend with excellent cinematography:

Amelie, Night of the Hunter, Rushmore, Requiem for a Dream, Dark City, and Suspiria.

*Also the Director's Label series of DVDs are fantastic b/c not only do they show the works of famous music video directors such as Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, or Chris Cunningham, but they include booklets which explains how they made the videos and conceptualized them.

Buy her an inexpensive video camera (old VHS ones can be found cheaply at a pawn shop...be sure to check them out before you buy or check the return policy) and have her start making movies about anything and everything she is interested in. Many of the great directors today got their making home movies when they were kids.

No amount of professional education in this field beats actual, hands-on experience.

Here is a link to director Robert Rodriguez's "10 Minute Film School" to get her started.

Good luck!

There are film camps you could send her to. Also some colleges have what is called 'Saturday Studios' where high school kids (and sometimes younger) come on campus and the college kids do projects with them. (at least the art college i went to did) Look around the area you live in and see if theres anything offered.
