You probably want to close all shades and blinds till 5 or 6 in the evening. Setting your AC on 78 degrees will keep the furnace from working overtime. Closing vents in rooms not used to sit in like the bathrooms or maybe your extra bedroom so that air will flow frequent to the rooms you are in. Using fans (ceiling or floor) will cut back on heat and your bill b/c they keep it the temp down.

home improvement stores sell an item called a whole house fan.they are installed on the roof.they circulate the air in the attic and they make a huge difference in cooling in summer and heating in the winter.plant trees on west side of house.

We tape aluminum foil to cover the inside glass in our west windows to reflect the sun's heat away. We also use heavy insulated curtains.

where I used to live, for ten years was there, I had gotten solar film from home depot I think, it worked very well, before that I had blinds and shades both together, the solar film worked better.
you wet the window apply the film and squeegee out the bubbles
