and return to the way the United States used to be? Like having the respect of other nations? being willing to negotiate long and hard before starting a war? Having consideration for human rights? Having leadership that is not solely bent on their own financial gains? Demanding a ceasefire when Israel goes overboard?

Conservative= preserving the "status quo" or the existing state of affairs, more traditional, yes, preserving the traditional Constitution

Wouldn't the definition of CONSERVATIVE really mean one who wants to preserve the Constitution?

I consider myself a conservative for exact this reason.

"Like having the respect of other nations?" All should have respect for other peaceful nations.

"being willing to negotiate long and hard before starting a war?" And who hasn't?

"Having consideration for human rights?" And who hasn't?

"Having leadership that is not solely bent on their own financial gains?" And who hasn't

"Demanding a ceasefire when Israel goes overboard?" Many think that Israel's actions are long overdue. This has nothing to do with C or R or L or D.

I like how you threw that Israel thing in the last bit.

Can't have a ceasefire when Hezbollah wants holy jihad 24/7.

Understand?

It takes two to tango.

1 + 1 = 2.
Ceasefire = 2
2 - 1 = 1

"Conservative" as a political term has no fixed definition, it's whatever people considerate it to be. Same as "Liberal". (Or Capitalist or any other term.) Republicans were once the liberal party and Democrats the conservatives...the parties redefine themselves however they decide the public will support.

I'm not sure if it's the conservative republicans that support Bush or the Big Business republicans...Some people could give a damn about government except how it affects their wallet, others feel a sense of "moral duty". Funny thing is, you find the same sort of people in both parties.

Basically, that's what it SHOULD mean. But it seems to have gotten bought up by the religious right, the ones who figure "going back to the old-fashioned values" means imposing fundamentalist Christianity on the nation. Which is nonsense, of course, because many of the founding fathers were Deists, people who believe in God but avoid getting specific about religion.

Conservatives tend to impose their moral beliefs on everyone.
There is a lack of understanding that not everyone has the same value system in place, and a small group of people do not have the right to say what is best for all people.
