Guitar is cool and you can teach your self so you dont have to spend money on lessons and can play in your own time

I took up guitar 3 years ago, at the moment i consider myself a fairly decent guitar player.
I learned all i know from scratch without a teacher, only a book I got off my uncle.
If u learn the basic music notation, which is in almost any beginners book for any instrument, you can easily understand and write songs of your own.
Once you've learned all this, it can be used with any instrument you can think of, such as a piano or guitar.
The rest then is tecnique, for example, any song i know now on guitar i'd be able figure out the notes on piano, but I wouldn't be able to play it well because i don't play the piano so I'm not used to the finger movements.

My best advice would be to pick up a Beginners book from a local music store and get to know the basic notation, then choose an instrument that suits the style of music you want to play. Then practice the tecnique on your insrument of choice.

And try not to get too frustrated at the start, i'm playin' over 3 years now and still get very frustrated with certain tecniques.

Age has nothing to do with the ability to play musical instruments. All the instruments are great, just that it depends on your interest, and the availability of resources to facilitate the learning process, to choose an appropriate 'thing'. As for guitar, it would be awesome to join classes, but it's not that necessary. All you need is a guitar and a favourite song. With the advent of the internet, abundance of guitar chords and guides are available for free download. Start practising. It might get hard at times, but you should not give up.

GO FOR IT!!!

It's never to late to learn but make sure you are committed to it. It will get difficult and it will be frustrating but it is so worth it.

Have a listen to lots of instruments and find the one you like the sound of best. I play the drums, guitar and the piano. and i love all three for different reasons. I think i favour the piano because you can get such a variety of music for this instrument.

You need to consider what kind of music you like and how likely you are to play. For example my sister used to play the trumpet but it was so loud she always felt really guilty for her neighbours! She doesn't play anymore and i think its a real shame.

I would find a good music store and get someone to demonstrate a few instruments to you. A good shop will let you handle a test out certain instruments.

It is never too late to learn. I have a friend who took up the trombone when he retired....he is not very good but he loves it and it gave him a new lease of life. It really is best if you learn an instrument that you can play in a group or band because peer pressure then encourages you to practice and improve.

just a few words of advice
dont give up when it gets hard
don't try to start at intermediate level songs
make sure that you try a few beginer songs for piano and guitar...
if you know piano you know the keyboard...
im self taught on both but on piano i can't read all the music i just play by ear.
which is something you should learn too..
