Sometimes this happens. Hold the mom's head as best you can and have someone get the calf under her to nurse. Once the calf starts nursing the mom is usually okay with it but if you let the milk build up for very long it will be painful at first, so get the calf to nurse soon. It needs that first milk to build up immunity.

It is not unusual for a first calf heifer to not have interest in her baby, especially if she had some trouble birthing it. There used to be a product called "Mother Up" that you could put on the calf and on the cow's nose to let her know (by smell) that that was her baby. I've heard people had similiar results using, believe it or not, Vicks Vaporub. Same concept. Wouldn't hurt to try it. In the meantime, be sure you get some help milking the cow out, so the calf gets some nutrition. Good luck!

What is she doing? Is she just walking off, afraid of it, aggressive with it or ?? Is it a beef or dairy cow?
Their first one sometimes they're clueless. you'll need a STRONG chute or post in the corner by a gate. Get a rope halter on her and snub her down...try to work calmly so she isn't worked up and on the fight. You'll need to either help the calf nurse or milk the cow and feed the calf colostrum. It will need that NOW.
Be prepared if it doesn't work to go get milk replacer. And if she doesn't take it - have her for dinner. Cows that don't raise their calves can be replaced by those who DO raise their calves.

No this is not normal. try and see if she will let you milk her so the baby can get some colostrum (helps fight off diseases) alot of new mothers do this, they don't know what to do. you will prob have to bottle feed it for the rest of its life if she wont let it nurse. go to the feed store or co-op and get some milk replacement. hope this helps.
