Okay, i have found out that they are quite good in cricket and in hockey, but that's all. There has to be a reason for this.

there is no infrastucture for sports in India.
you see only cricket is popular in India and other sports do not have enough funding, media attention so youth are not encouraged towards those sports.
Tennis and cricket are both very costly sports to pursue and initial development in these sports were solely baed on personal efforts. Now cricket is popular and huge infrastucture for it.tennis is growing.
Athletics & football are grossly ignored.

I think it's a problem of the number of people living in India - there are top athletes, but they are a very small group:
1. In tennis India have won quite a few doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam trophies owing mainly to the performance of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. Paes bagged a bronze Olympic medal in 1996. And now you have Sania Mirza.
2. Beginning in 2005 has Narain Karthikeyan driving for team Jordan. He is the first Indian to score point in f1 and now he is the second test driver for team Williams.
3. Badminton is supposed to have originated in India. Although India is not among the top teams, it does consistently produce players of high international ranking. Prakash padukone and Gopichand have won the prestigious All England Badminton Championship.
4. Saurav Ghosal became the first Indian ever to win the coveted British Junior Open U-19 Squash title, defeating Adel El Said of Egypt in the final at Sheffield, England.

Perhaps they are focused on other edeavors like education. How many doctors and enginers and computer techinolgy genuses do they create? Perhaps they are smarter than americans to waste time on a thing that does not usually turn lucrative? Call it being pratical. Perhaps they are just more intelligent than the adverage american that has sqewed values? I live here with all these american morons who cannot tell the difference between their butt and their mouth. It is an national embarasment. Even our president needs speach therapy. At least the people in India can read. Who knows if the "decider" can. I guess I am just sick of getting bashed on yahoo answers and sick of having people not know the truth of what is going on here and accepting medicority in our society as the rest of the world passes us by because we as americans are becomiing ingnorant and superficial. Perhaps the people in India are just smarter and want to have better careers and take care of their families.

Because there is very limited organised sport and they generally have few native sports. They are excellent cricketers though.
