AVG and ALL of the following protection software are needed to keep other Malware out.
(do NOT run 2 anti-virus on the same machine as they will conflict with each other.) (2 or more anti-spyware ARE recommended however)
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)
for further information on computer safety.

If you want one that is free try AVG - it's from grisoft. There is a free version and a version you pay for although the pay version is still cheaper than most. I use McAfee and Symantec (Norton) at work, and if a system is already infected I still have to load AVG sometimes because it's able to run and pick things up when the virus or spyware on the PC has rendered the other two useless. Another thing you can do if the laptop has XP is disable DCOM in the registry. Stops those nasty worms from being able to get to your system in the first place.

I, too, have a new laptop and it comes with norton internet security and is valid for three months. norton is the best and so is mcaffee, that is, if you can afford their annual fee. My NIS will expire this coming August but I will not renew my subscription. Instead, I will use clamwin or avg. clamwin is an opensource antivirus which is great but the only fallback is that it doesn't do real time access which means you'll have to manually scan the file after downloading to your hard drive. this feature is still on the works with clamwin. avg is the next best thing. good luck

My friend used avg free version and it was a nightmare, his pc crashed every other day,he changed to Norton and never had another problem,I use McAfee and think it is fantastic.
I would always be suspicious of something which is for nothing, why would avg give you free protection unless they can get you to upgrade to their premium payment service.
As I see it either Norton or Mcafee is a good choice !

concept i ought to throw my hat in the hoop with suggestions from putting forward, the reason they spend a lot on beauty surgical procedure is the docs fee way too a lot, and they does no longer choose beauty surgical procedure if society wasn't so judgmental on how human beings look. We as a society have created this situation alongside with many others, and once you communicate about how a lot you've given and boast about it, you've merely were given your reward as Christianity teaches, so no i does no longer follow on your footsteps, it really is sin in accordance to the Bible. On a reality experience i will inform if the wealthy or properly to do helped the poor and needy, we may all merely be mediocre, and that is a lifeless ringer for communism, something i'm no longer to stupid about, yet wait you probably did not say the poor ought to ought to artwork we may merely supply it to them and help them out. i imagine we already do this, its said as social suggestions and our taxes conceal that fee alongside with generating jobs for social workers. So we are already giving to the poor, we merely aren't any further boasting about the sturdy we are doing. genuine charity comes from the middle and is not any longer measured with suggestions from the media and what others imagine, that is done in secret so that you do not humiliate the needy or crown the giver.

I think Norton Symantec Internet Security is the best. This is the third year in a row that I am using it and I did not have any problems.

I looked into this recently and of the reviews I've read (see example below) AVAST comes out on top over AVG (though AVG also rated highly). I've downloaded AVAST and seems to work like a dream.

You can download AVAST free at:
