I reserve the word "friend" for someone with whom I can share even the most intimate aspects of my life, and who loves and appreciates me for who I am, warts and all.
A true friend will will always be honest: agree with you and defend you when you're right; disagree with you and guide you when you're wrong. A true friend will never let any harm come your way; and if it does, they'll be the first to offer a helping hand without even being asked. A true friend will comfort you when you're down; celebrate with you when you're up. Acquaintances are temporary; a true friend is a friend for life.
