I'm hoping to undertake a postgraduate course and they are asking for a first degree. I think it means a recognised degree but am not sure can anyone enlighten me.

It is bachelor degree... of course recognised.

It is a degree at the first level (a batchelor) In theory it doesn't matter what class of degree you got but in practice it does they normally want a higher than a 2:2.

A first degree is the first level of education one obtains in a higher institution.

they are just reffering to an entry level qualification needed to go on some courses, it could be to make up for the fact that you may have passed college with average marks or that the course you are intented to go on needs more qualifications than you have got.
Without more specific info could not be 100% certain.
