I believe in that, it would also bring a bit of discipline, I was sent boxing as a lad(hated it to start with) and it has helped in life, Not the fighting side just the commitment level and respect for my coach. Every one should have some sort of discipline in there life and a lot of people are not willing to earn it so doing something like that would help!

I believe all young people after main schooling at 16/17, should do at least 12 months service to their community and/or country. For some, national Service is the best choice or option as many do really need that strict discipline of the forces shot into them, teaching them independance from family, self management and teamwork, responsibility to others and alleigance to their country, which in turn brings respect for their environment. For some, national service is not the best choice, but what is wrong with these who are not suitable for the forces ( and I mean this will be a minority) to perform a service to their community, for example, working in hospitals to back up the nursing staff, with councils to keep the streets clean and ordered. If a young person learns just how hard life is and what it is to respect their environment and others, there would be better communities for people to live in.
many of the public school in the UK ( fee paying schools) run these types of schemes and are sometimes linked with the forces too, these young people come out fo schooling with a sense of responsibility to others and are generally not those to destroy their own society and have respect for others.

Great question! There is very little that is done to bring back 'national respect' in this country is there? And why do we display Union Jacks/St George's flags only for World Cup matches etc??
In current times, England ( as an example ) is indeed a multi cultural society with very little preserved 'englishness' that we may have seen in previous wars? Allegiance to the Queen is also a dying fad and may one day well completely fade.
To answer your question, yes I think they should bring back some form of conscription with a message of deep allegiance to country and fellow citizens ...... otherwise we may wonder why we are here and why we live in the country we do. Personally I love being British but how about the younger generation growing up in this country? And all of the other cultures that now make up this country? Conscription may bring us all into line perhaps ........ and give us all respect for our country. You only have to watch 'Lads Army' to see that would happen!

Absolutley !!

The way things are going now if action isnt taken to sort a bit of discipline & respect, who knows what the outcome will be, already knifings, shootings etc are common..

Throwing people in prisons etc isnt the answer, sometimes people need to feel part of society & encouraged to achieve things in life.

I am by far a so called 'Do Gooder' but a bit of thought is needed on this problem & I think this will be a great deterent & maybe useful to the individual.

I also think bringing back the 'Birch' or similar as a deterent will not go amiss, I know people will say youre going back to the dark ages, but they may change their minds if anything bad was to happen to them !!!!

PS, I am not a grumpy old person & I have young children !!!

National Service would not in itself instill a new respect for our country. Education, the Media, parents and the way they raise their children....all these have contributed to today's present climate.
National Service usually attracted under-educated or low-income youths who would have had nothing else to do. In that respect, it might control a lot of hooliganism, drugs and drink, in that it would give a segment of our youth some motivation for a couple of years. And some much-needed discipline.

As an ex-Raf airman - back in the fifties, I would most definitely recommend some sort of National Service or Boot Camp. The age group that is now causing trouble would be out of arms way then

no because you force peolpe into doing something they might not want to do.
the problem lies with the political correctness of society.
these are how respect would be brought back
1-teachers. pay them better.give them more powers.ignore the parents who will bleat at every oppourtunity because they molly coddle there kids.
2- jail-make it tough. get rid of the teles and social faciltles.make it a deterent. let them slop out.make it like the victorian ages
3- police, more of them.let them be feared.let them beat the twats who stand on street corners scaring old people etc
4- european human rights act- what is this on about??bin it
5- the independent- shut it down.its a paper who sticks up for these losers
6-review social support- that will make peolpe take jobs. tough jobs that build character.
7-education- make lessons happen where british pride is taught.sing the national anthem etc
8- judicial system- life means life.tougher sentences.get rid of the fairy judges or better still put them in prison for a while.
9- remove our noses from the behind of mr bush

Yes! Definitely. We need to install some discipline into some of these yobs. The total lack of respect needs addressing. I served 6 years in the army & would gladly re-enlist to sort some of th4ese hoodies out! Where's the pen for me to sign!!!!!

The sooner the better.

Not only would it bring back respect, but it would also cause some people to see how good they have it where they live compared to MOST of the rest of the world.

Where do we sign the petition to begin.

surely national service would bring back respect, not a lack of respect.

and i think that anyone found homeless should be made to sign up, that way they get food water and accomodation, as well as training for their future lives.
