As the other person said it does depend where you are going and where from. One thing I would say is that you should set up a good way of talking to home cheaply. If you have a computer you should investigate Skype or the Yahoo alternative. My daughter has it and we talk almost every day for free which really helped her when she was home sick. Otherwise study the country you are going to. What is the cost of living like? Are clothes cheap? Then don't take too many. Find out about the weather if it is colder then by your warm clothes there as they will be much better. If you are coming from Asia to Europe/US then bring spices; from UK to US take tea if you like it. If you have any contacts in that country, however distant (you know your second cousin's best friend's aunt) then take them and contact them. And have a good time.

Your college/university should have support for International students and often has a guide for what an international student should bring. Your first stop should be your college website (or other colleges/universities in the same city) or call their International Student support.

Well, you need to keep your documents with u all the time, don't bother about taking clothes and other stuff which are not at all important. When you first arrive u need to contact other ppl so bring a mobile phone and also telephone numbers of important ppl...and u might get a cultural shock so bring some things that reminds u of ur home!
