Irrespecitve of the subject, St. Andrews is THE place to go for academic excellence. It is Scotland's Oxbridge. You have to know, however, that Scotland runs a system similiar to Ireland and very different to England. Typically you are accepted into the Faculty (Arts, Science, Divinity) and compete at the end of Second year to get into Honours. It leads to smaller honours classes than in England but the competition is tought.

Other than St. Andrews, good places are Glasgow, Edinburght, Stirling and Aberdeen, followed by Dundee. St. Andrews might be the best for most subjects but it is a small town and many students get cabin fever there.

I'm Irish, I've got a friend studying in the Glasgow school of art and he really likes it but apparently if you're not in the art school it's a horrible place to be, I've another friend who repeated the leaving this year after spending a year in Glasgow and hating it. Edinburgh is the place to go I think.
