Questions of this magnitude tend to awaken deep thoughts, as well as stir emotions. So, I will say, to lie to remain honest is like a day with bright sun. But beware the dark clouds in yonder sky.

I think it really depends. If it hurts people to find out about the truth, then lying would be better in this situation. I agree that lying take a lot more than telling the truth. Also telling the truth can set one free, and lying can definitely make one more miserable--unless that person is a big liar himself or herself who lies to others ALL the time and doesn't feel wrong about doing so. In my case, I'd hope people neither lie nor tell the truth when they know the truth hurts me. Just keep silent when they know that I should NOT know something, such as when they hear the bad things people say behind my back. They don't have to lie, but then they shouldn't be honest either. Telling me this kind of truth does NO one any good, and it definitely does NOT make me trust them more. I won't regard them my allies. Nah! On the other hand, I also don't like people who INTENTIONALLY want to be honest about anything when they know their honesty acntually hurts others, or when they want to hurt others on purpose by being honest. That's even worse, I think.

It depends on the situation.
Lying can sometimes be ethical. For example:
During World War 2, if you were hiding people of the Jewish faith in your attic, and a German soldier asked you if you were, the answer should be "no", which is a lie. However, it is right to lie in this case.
Most day to day occurances are not quite this extreme, but you get the idea.

People who lie are simply the weakest... They lack confidence and they can't look at reality in the face. Being honest requires courage in so many ways and you can have a clear consciousness when you do so. Thruth= light /Lie= Shadow

it really depends. believe it or not most of us have split personalitites.Few people would admit this fact. Most of the time people like to be honest ,but sometimes to gain some personal advantage they lie. I'd like to give an example. One of my friends is very honest in his social life, but recently he lied to the immigration department of a country for the purpose of getting a desired visa.moreover, white lies are not bad at all.I have told all kinds of lies in my life. good and bad.Mostly good.

I am as honest as I can be. There are personality disorders that cause people to prefer to lie, and they are sociopaths, people with sick, dysfunctional relationships.

Honesty is the only way to go! It you don't play a game by the rules, why play at all? It is that simple. Liars always get caught, sooner or later. And it is one of the Ten Commandments!
