Sounds like you've got the wrong language version set for your keyboard. Change it to US English. It sounds like you've got it set to UK English or International English.

Well to find out if there is a problem with Ur keyboard or with Ur OS U can try this.
There is a inbuilt keyboard in Windows
Click
Start->All programs->Accessories->Accessibility->On-Screen Keyboard.
Now try writing something with this keyboard
If U are experiencing the same problem even with this On screen Keyboard then there is some problem with Ur driver. Update the driver or re-install the driver (U can find the driver on internet, try searching on google)
But if the on-screen keyboard is wroking fine than it's Ur Keyboard which is having a problem, try getting it repaired or replace it.

you've got it on british or international settings. go to control panel > regional and language options > languages (tab) > click "details" > under "English (your country)" click "keyboard" > click "add" (to the right) and select "english (US)" from the menu that comes up
hope that helps

Try to use LEFT ALT button (ALT on the left side of the space) instead SHIFT.
This ALT is called ALT Grown (ALT GR).
Wish you the best ;)
