The field effect would likely be an electromagnetic field, either an electric field as a result of disturbance of a magnetic field, or vice versa. The fundamental particle would be a virtual photon.

Field effect is usually a term related to transistors, this is defined as an electric field to control the shape and hence the conductivity of a "channel" in a semiconductor material. In this case it would be the electron that would be the fundamental particle.
