It's a question of fundamental beliefs. Everyone has them. They are those beliefs that are, to each individual, immutable truths.
For Republicans, it's their religion - a belief in a higher power that will one day judge their lives here on earth. All human endeavors, including politics, flow from this.
For Democrats, it's government (politics) - a belief that includes the idea that people are perfectible if molded correctly by government - which ideally contains the "elite" human thinkers. All of their endeavors, including religion, flow from this.
