Gosh I hate it when I think of questions like these. I spend like an hour pondering and then I give up.

Once I was thinking of how the world would be if the color blue didn't exist, or how it would be if the color green didn't exist, everything that color would disappear. But then someone would discover them, and they'd just appear, right? Wouldn't that be weird if the sky came out of nowhere? And how did they discover them if it was there all along, just hidden? How did they justify calling them 'blue', and 'green'? Lol, I thought too much about this.

Once I get caught up in questions like this, I never stop thinkin' bout them.

But to answer your question- it would just not match if we called green 'red' and red 'green'. We've been too used to them, and if we changed them, it would just be awkward.

Person1: Look, the sky is black!
Person2: No, it's blue.
P1: No. That tree is blue. The SKY is black.
P2: That tree is green!
P1: Are you color blind?! My blood is green!
P2: Look at that sidewalk. It's gray, isn't it?
P1: How would it be gray when gray is the color of a pumpkin?
P2: ARGH A PUMPKIN IS ORANGE
P1: ..........no, they're purple.
P2: HAVE YOU CHANGED ALL THE COLOR NAMES AROUND OR SOMETHING?!?!?!
P1: Uh......yes.
-awkward silence-

It can. If everyone started calling red blue then red would be blue. And if everyone started calling yellow red, then yellow would be the new red. The word "red" is just that - a word. It has no more significance than we, as people, give it.

Is this like a Why is the sky blue Mom ?? Question Because it just is. Why is the word red, who invented that word? We could go on for a while with this

Because our eyes are wired to see that as red. As for the name, it is like just another name. A matter of convenience.

This will blow your mind! Technically, when you see an object that is "red" it is not really "red" rather it is all the other colors and only REFLECTS the color "red". Otherwise you wouldn't be able to see the "red" light waves.
