Do not PISS on them as many people have suggested. The ammonia/acid will actually irritate your skin. It will also bring out little white marks on your shoes (esp if they are black) when they get wet.
Also do not fill them with newspaper. This is only usefull if you get the inside of the shoes really wet. newspaper is absorbent and will actually dry all the oils out of the leather (remember it is skin and needs moisture the same as your skin) When all of the oils dry out if the leather it will crack and split!
The best thing to do is get down to your local shoe store and buy a really decent leather moisturising cream (in the UK it's usually around £3.) and a pair of shoe stretchers, (wooden ones are around £20 but you can get plastic much cheaper) Plenty of cream and then leave the shoes all night with the stretchers in. They are also good for the soles of the shoes as the stretchers pull the soles back into shape so that (especially with ladies shoes) you wont get that horrible curved up toe.

either buy a shoe horn or you can use oil. By this I mean place a small amount of olive oil into the shoes, rub it into the leather, this will help soften it. The oil will dry providing you do only put a small amount in the shoe. This really does work. I buy shoes from India that are made from leather and they always hurt....So I use olive oil.

Take them to a shoe repair shop, they have a machine that can stretch them about a 1/2 size. But, it really depends on the type of shoe and pliability of the leather and design.

Soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and rub it on the inside of the shoe only and then wear them or stuff them with socks.
