I am 40yrs old and have been on Depo-provera for 10 years. I suffered from the age of 14 with severe PMT (yes it does exsist)! I tried everything from Oil of Eveing Primrose, Vitamins, Diet, Herbal you name it I tried it, I even seen a shrink cos my doctor thought it was all in my head. The only time I did not have PMT was the week I had my period, that week I felt great. Then a new doctor suggested Depo-Provera and believe me it changed my life and my husbands. Almost straight away my periods stopped (which is OK) and my PMT went, I feel fab when I've had the inj, I feel happier and have more energy, I gained weight but not that much. The problem I have always had is that when the injection is wearing off (11th week) I get the severe PMT ,raging headaches, depressed, moody. I know this must be a hormone imbalance but no one is wiiling to help me or send me for tests etc, I want to stop the injections but can't bear the PMT. Can anyone suggest what I can do or who I can see

Depo-provera doesn't have any dangerous long-term side effects.lt is based on the hormone progesterone and your body produces this in large amounts when you are pregnant.
Another way of getting rid of your PMT might be having a baby! Although since you're already 40,that's not really advisable.
Just continue with it,(depo-provera,l mean) until you're 45 or thereabouts and then allow the normal female menopause to set in naturally.
Once you're totally menopausal, you should be free of PMT symptoms for life.

Have you tried the other injection? If I am correct, the one you are on lasts for 3 months right? If so there is one that lasts a shorter ammount of time, so you wouldn't have to wait as long between injections. As far as I know it uses the same hormones so should have the same pleasing attributes as depo :) Oh and just in case you don't know (but I am sure you do) don't go to the doctors, go to the nearest family planning clinic instead, they are alot more understanding and can help you a whole lot more. Good luck!

Hi, I was on depo provera and it made me sick all the time - I had a hysterectomy at 23yrs old. If depo is working for you for the majority of the time I would say it was worth staying on it - alot of women dont get relief from any drug. If you are really concerned insist that you are refered to a consultant who will be able to advise - I was told that is a good drug as far as they go - best wishes xx

It all sounds very interesting - but what do you want people to reply?
Get well, I do hope. It sounds awful.
But get interested in things oputside yourself; do not keep on digging in yourself.
