most laptops have a cutoff switch for the monitor that shuts the screen off when you close the laptop. Look for a small button etc. right up near the hinge and see if it's stuck.
Another problem that occurs is that if you've had your laptop connected to an outside monitor, then shut the machine off without changing video modes, the screen output won't show until you switch it back. look at your function keys, see if you can find a monitor symbol somewhere, and see if you need to switch back to LCD...if it's not one of those two things, then try unplugging the machine, and removing the battery. Let it sit for several minutes, and then start it up again. If you still have a dark screen, time to call Dell tech support...
